Have you heard the name Leroy Nguyen? Well if you haven’t, I can assure you now you won’t forget it. This talented designer is making HUGE waves in the fashion industry and I’m he’s biggest fan! Debuting his second collection THE CANDY SHOP at The Innovators show at Mercedes Fashion Week this year, placing him in esteemed company alongside past Innovator graduates such as Dion Lee, Christopher Esber and Emma Mulholland.

His collection is strong in structure with clean lines and bold shapes. Pieces are feminine yet masculine whilst also providing a sporty elegant touch (that equals perfection in my books) I have never been been so excited to interview a designer, he’s such a bright new star in the fashion world!

It is amazing that you only graduated from TAFE’s Fashion Design Studio in 2012 yet you have already received so much praise from elite industry professionals, what do you account your huge success too? My mates constantly tell me that I’m generally a very lucky person and my family insists that I’m a fortunate carrier of the ‘lucky Nguyen gene’. I catch myself and feel incredibly floored and blessed by all the positive attention that my work has generated in such a short amount of time. At the end of the day though, I think I’m a hard worker with strong focus, who’s pretty pedantic when it comes to getting things right.

Your graduate collection ‘Natural Born Killer’ was very impressive and ticked every box for me with its mix of athleticism and femininity. How would you describe your highly anticipated second collection ‘The Candy Shop’ that recently debuted at MBFWA 2013? THE CANDY SHOP continues to explore a mix of athleticism and femininity, with a focus on calculated, clean cuts and bold shapes, whilst still complimenting the female form. With inspirations drawn from Willy Wonka and his psychedelic wonderland, the colour palette is a little more adventurous, warm and bright in comparison to my graduate range NATURAL BORN KILLER.  A mix of tailored athleticism, swim and cocktail, the collection is a celebration of Summer and colour which evolved through my design ethos of ‘youthful maturity’.

Your label is young but already making waves, it has such a clear direction. Your design aesthetic is clean with a strong focus on cut and masculine tailored lines, where do you draw your inspiration? I design with my ideal woman in mind. Bold, quietly confident and not overly fussy. I can’t really explain it, but I feel like there’s something very brave about my designs and behind those that choose to wear my designs. Quality and comfort are always key.

Are there any designers you look up to or admire for what they have managed to achieve?Internationally Raf Simons is a God. Locally, Dion Lee is killing it. Both designers have this quiet sensibility about them, where they are consistently innovative and fresh with each collection, but stick so close to their brand aesthetic. That’s very important I think.

What advice would you give to someone looking to start a successful label or studying fashion design? Stick to you guns and believe in your vision. The final product will be better for it. Also, you can never be too organized and you can never start too early.

You have hit the ground running since graduating, where do you see your label heading in the future? I’m currently working on Autumn/Winter 2014, which is very exciting. Over the next few years I’ll be focusing on cementing strong stockists within Australia and long term I am aiming to take the brand global. If I can build the brand and break into the New York and Hong Kong markets I will be a very happy man.
