I have always been a denim kind of girl! When you find a brand that fits your body well, is super affordable and has cool prints..I fall in love even more! A few months ago, I came across a pair of leopard print RES denim shorts in my local shop in St Kilda and from that moment I became hooked. I was lucky to recently have a chat with Elly Frangos- the talented head designer behind the label to learn more about this intriguing new Melbourne denim brand, that is definitely the talk around town.
What is your background in Denim design? I have been working as a fashion designer since 2001 and have always had an interest in denim. When I was offered the opportunity to specialise, I grabbed it with both hands and was lucky enough to work with an amazing mentor Colin DeLutis who owns Australian denim icon Bradmill. It was Colin who introduced me to denim specific trend forecasting and design, which has since taken me around the world on research often for many major players in the Australian denim industry. Now my focus is as creative womens head designer of the companies first in-house label RES Denim.
RES Denim is quite a young label launching in 2012 but your intelligent design and directional approach to denim is so refreshing, where do you draw your inspiration from? With my background in trend forecasting I’ve been immersed in denim of all manners of creation, so I guess I look at it a bit differently to others. I can gather inspiration from the depth of a piece of raw fabric, something torn, frayed or sundrenched. Other inspiration comes from travel memories or everyday Melbourne life, movies, old costumes and album covers and songs. Fit ideas are usually inspired by vintage editorial pictures of jeans from decades past
The new AW collection is amazing! Whats your favourite piece from the collection? Aww Thank you!! For me a favourite piece is hard as it depends on my mood. At the moment its a little love triangle between the Trashqueen Moonwalker, the Rizzo in Black Diamond and the Harrys Hi in Love on the Spot… I think it’s safe to say that I’m crazy for skin-tight jeans in general.
How would you describe the RES Denim women? I think she’s a strong, free-spirited young woman that has her own take on style. She’s a bit of a hell-raiser and isn’t afraid to try things a little left of centre. Fashion wise she’s definitely no wallflower.
Your pieces are so comfortable to wear, as the denim feels so light, can you give more insight into your denim design process? Collections for me usually start with fabrics. I view the latest denim “fabric” collections from Europe and the US, most of these being the beautiful super stretch, light weight jegging and coated jeather denim that we use in current collections. I’m also lucky enough to review our amazing collection of vintage denim rolls that we have kept in storage from the days of the original Melbourne mill production at Bradmill. From here I move into collection inspiration and create mood boards; from this process comes wash direction, prints, colour and fits.
Whats next for RES Denim? Realigning the denim stars and sending bad denim into retrograde.
