Denim Fever

This month I have collaborated with Myer to bring you my favourite denim styles for the season ahead. Most of us, have dozens of pairs tucked away in our wardrobe. Now is the perfect time to look at your current pile to decide what you need to keep and what new styles you may need to invest in.

Denim trends come and go and this year is no different with flares on the radar for yet another season. Working as a stylist, I should probably include them on my hit list, but I just can’t do it. The style is so restrictive, and they only suit certain body types, if you don’t wear them with the right clothing they can look so bad.

Here are my denim tips to stand out in denim this season:

1: Layering is key: It’s no secret that in winter, layering is your best friend. I am not a fan of heavy clothing as it doesn’t give you much room to play.

I love to invest in chambray shirts, bomber jackets, thin knits and light cotton t-shirts to create an interesting layered look. These lighter pieces will also give you more versitality as you can wear them now when the weather is a little warmer all the way through to the cooler months.

DKNY X Cara Delevigne bomber jacket $590, Miss Shop slogan tee $24.95, Material World Chambray shirt $49.95, Vale denim skirt $220 (in store at Myer), Robert Robert Aura Tahitian Pumps $219.95 (in store at Myer)

2: White Jeans are still my go to: I can’t live without mine as they inject a fresh tone against all the dark colours I tend to wear in winter. As much as I love blue and black denim, we wear them to death as it gets cooler, so it’s easy to get into a rut. White jeans also work perfectly with black; I pair mine with a black blazer or some leather. If black feels a little too predictable then team it with on-trend khaki.

Zadig & Voltaire Leather Biker Jacket $950 (in store at Myer), AG Adriano Goldschmied White Jeans $279, Kenzo Long sleeve Top $200 (in store at Myer), Tony Bianco Black Pumps $139.95 (in store at Myer), True Religion Chambray Shirt $319, McQ Alexander McQueen Animal Print Envelope Clutch $615 (in store at Myer)

3: Style you denim for tonal look: Wearing clothes in the same colour palette will give your look some dimension, warm neutrals like camel, creamy grey and tan are the way to go. Tonal looks demand attention as it isn’t a look that everyone can pull off, but once you master it you will never look back.

Material World Jeans $69.95, Jayson Brunsdon Black Charcoal Coat $349, Skin & Threads Turtle Neck Knit $248

4: Nothing beats your white shirt: Is there any other item out that beats the humble white shirt? The answer is no, as this baby saves the day on countless occasions. This look calls for a crisp and tailored cut as it adds some class to double denim. If you are layering or wearing it under a blazer oversized styles are the way to go.

Ryder Denim Jacket $149, Ryder Denim Short $89.00 (in store Myer), Each X Other White Shirt $390 (in store Myer), Victor & Rolf Handbag $1750 (available in store April) Nude ‘McDreamy’ Brogues $199.95

5: Mixing your high’s and low’s: A tailored black blazer is always named on every stylist’s hit list, this is because it elevates you look. Throwing it over your shoulders is still a key look this season. The cape jacket is another trending style. Mixing your luxe items (like this Ellery jacket) with more casual items like this tee, cons and denim skirt is a great way to mix the high and low to create a winning combo.

Ellery blazer $1350, Jayson Brunsdon Black Tee $159, Mini Cream denim skirt $149.95, Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Hi Optical White Sneaker $90.00

6: Plaid Up: Plaid sweaters and oversized dresses are popular again this season. It’s one of these trends that comes and goes and after looking at the international runways its back in a big way with different interesting tones, red and blue work with denim best.

Skin & Threads Gingham Silk Shirt Dress $288, Skin & threads Chambray Shirt $190 (both in store at Myer), Miss Shop Croc Black heeled boots$89.95
