Particularly down the red carpet when Lupita Nyong’o wore that stunning red cape dress at the red carpet at the Golden Globes in 2014 and catapulted herself into a global fashion icon. I actually almost wore a removable cape to my wedding dress last year, so I am definitely a fan. This winter is easier than ever to give the look a go. Opting for a black cape is always the safest option as you can be guaranteed it will work well with your other wardrobe staples and alongside popular winter colours of khaki, denim and white. For those of you that want to mix it up, grey, camel and stripe patterns work well. So which to buy? If you opt for a cropped cape coat, then wear it with shorter skirts.
If your cape has plenty of fabric and folds (perfect for those cold days to come), then counterbalance the volume with a pencil skirt. My perfectly tailored cape has a shorter front with longer black, which is right up my alley because it means I can style it with my favourite skinny leg jeans or these leather look khaki jeggings which are a perfect alternative to denim because they look tight but are super comfy. This cape is a fantastic layering piece as the shorter hemline means my favourite knit and skirt layers can be seen underneath.
Don’t be scared to give the cape coat a go this winter.
